About Me:
You can find out some things about me from my blog: Barnabas Quotidianus.

I've been a Baha'i since 1966, the year after I left school, so this Faith has shaped the whole of my adult life. However, I know that I am still learning and have many questions to ask. The older I get, the more I realize that I know little, very little - almost nothing, in fact.
Hometown:
Born in Minehead, Somerset, lived here and there, including 10 years in the Shetland Islands. Now in Welwyn, Herts, UK

Becoming aware of religious difference

St Teresa's was the first school I attended. Run by an order of Roman Catholic Nuns, it was generally known as 'the Convent'. I started here when I was a few months younger than 5 and left when I was 8 to go to boarding school.

It was here I first became aware of religious difference. I was Church of England and this was pre-Vatican II, so we Protestants were regarded by the Catholics as not proper Christians. We were siphoned off into a separate classroom to be taught scripture by a small woman in a grey felt hat, who annoyed me intensely by calling me "little boy". I mean, I was 5 and a big boy!

My Catholic friends used to go off for mysterious ceremonies and would return with crosses of ash marked on their foreheads (Ash Wednesday) or palm fronds.

I had no way of measuring the significance of these things at the age of 5. Looking back, I realize that they were probably of little significance, but I still get an odd frisson when I attend services - as I do from time to time as an inter-faith representative - in a Catholic church. Needless to say, some of my best friends are Catholics!

Thanks, Sara

A Tweet from Sara alerted me to this treasure box. So I've signed up and hope to engage in soul talk discourse. Right now I should be working on a book review for the UK Baha'i Journal. The book is "Your God Shall Be My God: Religious Conversion in Britain Today" by Jonathan A. Romain. The partly drafted review is far too long and I have to both edit it down and add more. A paradox? Yes, but then life is full of paradoxes!

Good morning, Barney

I have not logged into Soul Talk in some months. Nancy told me later that the comment about Christ returning was hers to you. How little we know of our wives! In 7 years of visiting Lasseube 2 to 4 times a year, we have encountered rainy weather twice. Well it rains but not so much for days on end. At least on our visits.

You and Erica have a permanent invitation to visit us in France. Maybe you will have good weather when you do. I experienced my first autumn there last November. Although at the end of autumn colors, still it was a treat. But really any season will do.

Well Barney, enjoy! I was in Acuto for the EBBF gathering in June. The weather at that altitude was a bit chilly in the evenings. But Italy has warmed up on the whole since then.

On a funny note, in the 1950s and 1960s one might occasionally see neon lit crosses above or near churches. During that era, grocery stores gave out stamps. The quantity one received was based on the amount of purchase. The biggest and oldest company, I think, was S & H Green Stamps. Well someone recalled seeing one of those neon lit crosses with the words 'Jesus Saves' and below it a billboard that read 'S & H Green Stamps.' Kind of silly.

Barney,

Very interesting background! I am also noticing your recalling having seen a billboard of Jesus Christ coming soon. When I was 16 years old, I felt a yearning to meet the Apostle Peter. I became a Baha'i in 1967 at 21 years of age. In 1970 I met William Sears. He wrote in his book - God Loves Laughter - of the shiny man who called him Peter in his dreams.

Thanks for sharing,

Barron

And what a blessing it is, as parents, to have the prayers for children even before they are born. I am sure the effects are very great indeed.

I remember as a very young girl in Miami, probably not more than 7 or 8 years old, seeing a billboard with my parents that said "Jesus Christ is coming soon" and I knew within my heart that I would recognise him. The faith of a child is very pure and often shapes for life.

Barney -

Great hearing from you and seeing that you have joined soul talk. Baha'i Arts was followed by summer school here in Pt. Eric came over from LA. His performing added much to evening proceedings. Now we are preparing for 2 weeks in the states.
